Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku (Indonesian) [Memories of My Body]

I found this film almost magnetic in a way I couldn't fully explain. Some films have that rare quality where every frame feels worth taking in—the people, the settings, the movement—and this one completely has it. It’s a fictionalised retelling of real moments from the life of dancer and choreographer Rianto, who performs the Lengger dance, a traditional form from his native island of Java in which men adopt feminine appearances and movements.
The film follows Juno in something like chapters, with each section capturing a different phase of his life—his childhood, his teenage years—and each one centres on a crisis connected to how the people around him interpret his body and sexuality. Having grown up without a mother figure, Juno is at ease with solitude and isolation. When he is young, a dance master notices the grace and flexibility of his body and recognises him as a natural dancer, yet those same effeminate qualities make him a target for bullying. As a teenager, we see him learning to sew, and much of this chapter focuses on his bond with a boxer from the village. Juno becomes a sort of assistant to him, and the boxer genuinely enjoys his company. The homosexual undertones are unmistakable, and Juno seems utterly captivated by the man’s physicality, viewing him as somewhere between a friend and an obsession. He trembles as he watches the boxer attempt to force himself into the version of masculinity everyone expects from a real man. Sadly, that storyline goes nowhere hopeful, since the boxer nearly loses his life because of debts. In the final chapter, hints of communist activity arrive in the village, and a communist officer becomes intensely drawn to Juno, both as a man and as a dancer. Yet his desires clash directly with the party rhetoric he is promoting, and that tension places Juno at the centre of a much bigger struggle—desired because of his feminine grace and his dancing, but largely powerless against the forces closing in around him. The brief intermissions between chapters, when Juno comes forward to speak directly to the camera and dance only for us, are quietly powerful. They form an intimate connection between him and the audience that carries through the entire film.
Memories of My Body is beautiful, contemplative, and not interested in giving you a clean plot or neat conclusions. It is very much for viewers comfortable with slow cinema that does not follow a conventional structure. It brings film and traditional performance together in a way that feels unlike either medium by itself. Still, even without a clear narrative arc, I was completely pulled into Juno’s world, especially in the boxer chapter. Even when same sex attraction appears, that is never really what the film is about. It is about something more immediate: the deep internal need to inhabit the body you actually have. I wouldn’t call this a gay film at all. It is more a study of gender fluidity, the mystique of the human body, and the personal, social, and political pressures bearing down on all of it at once. Beneath everything, the message is about learning to love yourself, and about recognising the trauma bodies take in over a lifetime and how that changes who we become. Juno has endured verbal abuse and violence since he was very young, and the film asks you to sit with that and understand it. It also quietly observes that the people hurting him often did not even realise the harm they were causing. If you go in expecting a gay storyline, you will not find one. But if you are open to a beautifully crafted film that explores gender fluidity, ancient tradition, sexuality, culture, and what it means to exist right at the centre of all those things, it is absolutely worth your time.
