Stableboy (Vertical BL Drama)

Matthew Carter November 5, 2026

Even with a cowboy setting, this Reelshort BL feels familiar. Evan and Colt, the same leads from Waterboy, have some genuine spark, but their new story follows a well-worn path.

Evan is an openly gay city kid sent by his father to a ranch in the Midwest. His chance to attend culinary school in Paris depends on joining the high school rodeo team. Colt Maddox, the team captain, is a straight golden boy whose hopes of going pro hinge on winning State. Colt’s father puts Evan to work as Colt’s stableboy, expecting the job to toughen him up.

Instead, Evan develops feelings for Colt, who keeps flirting without making clear where he stands. After they kiss, a dinner-table confrontation exposes the gap between them: Colt lets his father use slurs about gay people, and Evan is understandably furious. Colt argues that being open about his sexuality, as Evan is, is not realistic in the world he comes from.

The rest follows the expected route from enemies to friends to lovers. Colt intervenes when the other cowboys bully Evan, then finally declares his feelings in front of the whole community. Everyone accepts the relationship.

There’s no jealous ex-girlfriend stirring up trouble, and the leads’ previous pairing gives their scenes a spark that carries over. The series also approaches homophobia in small towns, bullying and the strain of hiding who you are with a decent degree of sensitivity. Some rodeo stunts, first aimed at Evan and then at Colt, are pretty over the top. The two leads also get a fair amount of steamy screen time.

I’ve already stopped watching the AI-generated quickies, and these vertical micro dramas may be next unless there’s nothing else to watch. At least this one leaves behind the usual university or gaming backdrop for a western theme. But a fresh setting can’t disguise another generic BL story built from familiar parts. These shows need to raise their game before they settle into a rut. (3.5/10)
