Hard Shift (Vertical BL Drama)

Mixing medical drama with emotional turmoil, Hard Shift is a fast paced vertical mini-series available on the NetShort app. The story follows a composed urologist whose calm demeanor unravels the second a rebellious race car driver enters his clinic. What follows is a tug-of-war between personal desire and professional reason. While the setting is fresh, the tropes remain the same, fitting perfectly into the vertical BL world you are already familiar with.

The plot centers on Liam Summers, a famous race car driver and wealthy heir, who visits Dr Jasper’s urology clinic to address erection problems. Jasper finds himself immediately attracted to him; during the examination, he suggests the issue could stem from racing stress or perhaps the possibility that Liam is actually into men rather than women. To test this, Liam tries gay porn, but since it doesn’t work for him, he downloads an app to meet a man. Through a very convenient twist, Dr Jasper is staying at the same hotel where Liam’s hookup is supposed to be, leading the two to spend the night together instead. This encounter upsets the man Liam was originally meant to meet, who begins pursuing both Liam and Jasper in increasingly weird ways. Meanwhile, Liam’s girlfriend continues to push for marriage, throwing herself at him constantly. Amidst this confusion regarding his own sexuality, Liam finds Dr Jasper pushing past medical ethics until the two eventually become a couple. The relationship faces opposition from Liam’s father, who refuses to accept them. In an attempt to destroy Dr Jasper’s reputation, the rejected hookup and the bitter girlfriend team up, though Liam steps in to fix the situation. Ultimately, the father has a last minute change of heart and gives the couple his blessing.

A few elements stand out, specifically that the two leads are very easy on the eyes and the series includes a few actually hot scenes between them. However, those are the only positives for me. Watching Dr Jasper pursue Liam is quite uncomfortable, as his behavior borders on harassment by constantly pushing himself on someone who keeps saying no. Rather than treating the ED, he decides the solution is sleeping with his own patient—creative liberties, perhaps, but still. The girlfriend is another issue entirely; she repeatedly walks in on the two men together yet still insists Liam will marry her, which makes me want to shake her and tell her to have some self respect. Additionally, the father’s sudden turnaround at the end feels like it comes out of nowhere and makes very little sense. That said, anyone seasoned in vertical BL dramas knows exactly what they are getting: quick guilty pleasure entertainment featuring good looking people. This delivers on those two fronts and absolutely nothing else, offering nothing that will stick with you past the credits.(3.5/10)
