Gay Short Films : 130

Burn Bridge (UK)Secretly pining for his roguish, constantly horny straight best friend Jamie, Harry is your typical angst-ridden teenager. His true feelings begin to surface as jealousy takes hold when Jamie starts seeing a local girl. This film explores the difficulty of moving past those intense, lustful teenage infatuations. Nice film.

Mồ Hôi (Vietnam) [Sweat]Hung, a farm worker, is getting ready to cross the border of rural Vietnam to find refuge in another country. While his life has mostly been a cycle of labor and routine, his last day spent with a fellow worker, Hoang, changes how he perceives both himself and the world. The film highlights the complex struggles involving displacement, the nation, and the nuances of queerness. tbh I thought it was quite mundane and boring.

Photographs (USA)Greyson, who is dealing with a recent heartbreak, agrees to let his high school friend Robby, a photography student, use him as a model for a portfolio. The goal is to update Greyson’s dating app photos, but as the shoot progresses, a quiet romance develops between the two. It was a simple, sweet love story of young adults, and the two boys were cute.

Aviones de Papel (Ecuador) [Paper Airplanes]Mateo, sixteen, is navigating a confusing psychic and homosexual awakening. He is struggling with loneliness and isn’t prepared to bid farewell to the spirit of his mother, Rosa, who appears to him. Following his grandmother’s hospitalization, he forms a strange, intimate bond with Enrique, a boy who recently committed suicide, through which he experiences the beautiful imperfections of life and love. To be honest, it is a bizarre film overall.

Außerhalb des Aquariums (Germany) [Outside the Aquarium]Jonas is getting ready to launch his latest exhibition, Beyond the Aquarium, at a local art fair in Germany. His experience is shaped by the social stigma and creative pressure resulting from his multiple marginalized identities as a gay man, an immigrant, and a black man. His nights are filled with dreams of fluorescent-colored sea creatures that hint at shifts in his career and love life. The film delves into his intimate artwork, his anxiety regarding being fetishized by the white gay community due to his racial features, and the touching moment of finally meeting his one true love.

Only Trumpets (USA)Seeking love despite a cynical outlook, Tristan uses dating apps to stave off his loneliness with casual hookups. This changes when he meets a gentle stranger at a bar one night. Though their passionate, magical evening is brief, it leaves him with a lasting feeling of having found a real connection.

Remember I Am Dead (Germany)After Sagat, a young farmer, visits a cemetery in the middle of the night, he wakes to find a mysterious man sitting in his living room the following morning. This man is Roman, someone Sagat has somehow brought back to life. After Sagat begins taking care of him, the film features an almost 20-25 min long take of them having full on sex. Roman’s desire is to return underground, yet I found the connection and ties between these two men quite confusing. I am not sure what were the makers intentions, especially with a mid film of almost 55 minutes duration where half time is just for a sex scene!

Skin On Skin (Germany)In a German industrial slaughterhouse where Boris from Bosnia performs the slaughtering and Jakob works as a security guard, a different sort of evil is taking root through unpaid wages, exploitation, and the abuse of foreign labor. Even in this inhospitable environment, however, tenderness and love find a way to exist. Jakob is willing to risk his own future and life to help Boris return home, but he gets the shock of his life when it turns out Boris ha a wife back home. With fantastic direction and acting, this short film is almost perfect and such a beautiful film.

Capitanes (2024) [Captains]A heated, high-stakes cup semi-final serves as the backdrop for a clash between two football team captains, an argument that unearths a hidden truth within the first division dressing rooms: the silence surrounding homosexual footballers. The tension breaks when the two begin to make out, an act witnessed by the entire team. It is a powerful, essential message regarding courage, fear, and authenticity within the sporting world. By centering the narrative on the captains, the film challenges our understanding of “leadership” and the definition of strength, both on and off the field.

Skylight (Japan)Living in a small Japanese town, Haru is a young gay man whose life changes when he meets Leo, an American guy. After hooking up and spending time together, Leo prepares to return to the US because he cannot live openly as a gay man in Japan. For their final hangout time together, Haru suggests a trip to the beach. Once they go their separate ways, Haru’s closed-off world begins to feel the bloom of deep-seated insecurity and longing.

Slightly Future, In A Room (Japan)To address the issue of childlessness, the Japanese government has started experimenting with male artificial womb transplants in the near-future. Takashi, one of the first transplant recipients, acts as a surrogate father by producing fertilized eggs for a strange couple. When a man arrives claiming to be the father of the fetus, the characters must confront the reality of how a man can conceive and give birth to a child in his room. While not necessarily a gay film, it presents quite a new idea.

Watamula (Curacao – Netherlands)In Watamula, Curaçao truly comes alive. It serves as the setting for René, who makes a staggering appearance by emerging from a river to continue his trek across the island. While clutching the amulet he received at birth, he encounters both sweet rose petals and sharp thorns, navigating a path of comfort and rejection. This short film explores a young man’s sexuality, leaning into themes of identity, sensual awakening, and magical realism set against an Afro-Caribbean backdrop. Weird yet beautiful !

Kairos (Poland)While attending the premiere of a play by an old friend, Hubert finds himself forced to face his past. The film examines the concept of “Kairos” – a life-altering turning point – as he reflects on his youthful choices and a lost relationship. By interweaving two timelines, the story delves into the courage required to live authentically and the weight of missed opportunities. It is a beautiful film, although slightly ambiguous.

Filtra la luce (Italy) [The Light That Comes Through]Writing serves as the outlet for Noah, an introverted teenager harboring a secret attraction to his classmate Luca. With the start of summer, he heads back to a naturist beach that holds bittersweet memories of childhood visits with his parents before his father fell ill. It is there that he meets Lucas, forcing him to face his limits and his desires. While this is a lovely film about first love, it is handled in a fairly safe manner. It is just a shame that the filmmakers lacked the courage to do something more with the material.

My Age Now (USA)The narrative explores the fallout of a relationship that has reached its end. Haunted by a voice message he cannot retract, a young man struggles with the void left by a lover who departed without providing any closure. Presented as an experimental memory piece, the short captures a shared session of lovemaking that feels so vivid it borders on reality. While the film is visually stunning, featuring beautiful intimate moments set against a background of a voice message playing on repeat, I found myself wishing the overall film was as engaging as the visual imagery.

Inang Reyna (Canada) [Queen Mother]After arriving at her son Isaac’s apartment with supplies for his upcoming performance, Dolores finds that a routine visit quickly turns into an evening of unexpected vulnerability. As they navigate shared memories and painful revelations, both Dolores and Isaac must confront the secrets, silence, and sacrifices that have tested their relationship, leaving them to wonder if they can still find healing. It is a nicely done film that also slightly touches upon immigrants building a new life and being true to themselves.

Wetboy (Netherlands)This film tracks the journey of Sef, a 19-year-old boy from Limburg, as he navigates identity and love within a conservative environment. While out for a swim with friends, one of his companions notices him liking boys pics on phone and offers assurance that he is okay with it. However, a summer trip to the river leads to an unforeseen moment; beneath the water, tension between two friends erupts into shock, anger, and questions that neither is prepared to address. It is a story of Sef’s self-discovery and his struggle to find acceptance.

What You Doin’? (WYD?) (Germany)Exchanging the comfort of his social circle for the rush of a digital hookup, Richie finds himself in the Bodybuilder’s apartment. What starts as a promising encounter shifts into a series of awkward yet vulnerable dialogues, eventually evolving into a strange ritual that feels both physical and intimate, yet oddly liberating. The host’s singular desire to lift a muscular man leaves the visitor in a state of total confusion. It is a funny, awkward, and unexpectedly tender meeting between two men grappling with masculinity, their own fantasies, and their unspoken truths.

Cross At Dawn (USA)This short film, entirely AI generated, follows two college students, Ezra and Cash. Although Cash is a bullied individual and a source of trouble, Ezra is drawn to him, and their shared time results in losses for both. When the church head discovers their connection, Ezra faces reprimand. To build a life together, the pair must resist the rigid religious and traditional rules set by their families. While the AI-generated nature of the work is glaringly obvious and suggests a long road ahead for the technology, the story feels rushed and provides an unpleasant viewing experience.

Deep Red and Black: The Hitman’s Lost Lover (USA)When Kyle, an Irish-American hitman, is assigned a Tokyo yakuza hit job, he discovers his target is Julien, a French filmmaker and his former lover who possesses the gang’s criminal evidence. Choosing to save Julien, Kyle betrays the mob, leading to a chase through a stormy Shinjuku. Following a brutal battle at the port that dismantles the syndicate, Kyle turns himself in for his actions, leaving Julien to finish his documentary ‘Deep Red and Black’ while waiting for his lover to be released. This is another AI generated piece, and I had zero interest in watching it.

Gay Short Films : 130Mango Romance A chance encounter on campus leads to two lovely boys falling deeper in love as the days pass. Despite facing various small setbacks and relationship troubles, their true love eventually prevails, and they end up staying side by side to hold onto their love. This was the third AI generated movie included in the package I watched. I don’t think I can stomach these AI generated gay short films; while the boys are hot, everything else feels quite lame.
